Installing a DIY fly screen is a straightforward process. Here are the steps you can follow:
1.Materials and Tools Needed
- Fly screen mesh
- Screen frame kit or frame material (aluminum or PVC)
- Screen spline (rubber or plastic cord)
- Spline roller tool
- Measuring tape
- Utility knife or scissors
- Hacksaw (if using aluminum frame material)
- Corner connectors (if not included in the frame kit)
- Screen clips or magnets (if applicable)
(1) Measure the Window or Door Opening: Measure the width and height of the opening where you want to install the fly screen. Add a few extra centimeters to each measurement to ensure a snug fit.
(2) Cut the Frame Material: If using a screen frame kit, cut the frame pieces to the appropriate lengths using a hacksaw for aluminum or a utility knife for PVC. Make sure to include the additional length for the corner connectors.
(3) Assemble the Frame: Insert the corner connectors into the ends of the frame pieces to form a rectangle (or the desired shape). Ensure the corners are square and the frame is sturdy.
(4) Cut the Fly Screen Mesh: Lay the fly screen mesh over the assembled frame. Cut the mesh, leaving about 2-3 cm of excess around all sides of the frame.
(5) Install the Fly Screen Mesh: Place the mesh over the frame. Starting at one corner, use the spline roller tool to press the spline into the groove of the frame, securing the mesh in place. Work your way around the frame, keeping the mesh taut and wrinkle-free.
(6) Trim Excess Mesh: Once the mesh is securely in place, use a utility knife or scissors to trim any excess mesh along the edges of the frame.
(7) Install the Fly Screen: Place the completed fly screen into the window or door opening. Depending on the type of installation, use screen clips, magnets, or other fasteners to secure the screen in place.
3.Additional Tips
- For Large Screens: If you're installing a large screen, it may be helpful to have an extra pair of hands to help keep the mesh taut while installing the spline.
- Check for Tautness: Ensure the screen mesh is taut to avoid any sagging which might allow insects to enter.
- Corner Connectors: Make sure the corner connectors are securely fitted to prevent the frame from coming apart.
